A motion to reconsider the measure is expected.
The House of Representatives narrowly rejected the measure to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas late Tuesday. The House majority had sought the impeachment over the border crisis. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana was not present for the vote as he was undergoing cancer treatment.
House Homeland Secretary Committee Chair Mark Green of Tennessee said, “While I’m disappointed in the outcome of today’s vote, this is not the end of our efforts to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable. I look forward to Leader Scalise’s return.”
Representative Blake Moore of Utah changed his vote to “no” so that the measure would not end in a tie vote, which would stop it from being reconsidered.
Representative Al Green of Texas came to the House in a wheelchair from the hospital, where he is convalescing after emergency abdominal surgery, to cast his “no“ vote. “I was determined to cast the vote long before – I had no idea how close it was going to be,” Congressman Green said. “I didn’t come assuming my vote was going to make a difference.”
